Water enters the roof at one point but travels before it appears inside. On a pitched roof, water runs down the underside of the tile battens, along the top of the rafter, and may travel several metres horizontally before dripping onto the ceiling. The damp patch on your bedroom ceiling may be directly below a rafter joint three metres from the actual tile fault. This is why ground-level diagnosis is unreliable.
On a dry day, go into the loft with a torch. Look for daylight showing through the roof covering. Check for water staining on the underside of the membrane or felt. Look for damp or discoloured timbers. Follow any staining upwards from the point above your ceiling damp patch towards the roof covering. The staining trail leads you to the entry point. Mark it with chalk or tape so the roofer can find it from outside.
